Vintage beech chair after Hans Wegner
SOLD
A perfect desk or occasional chair clearly modelled on Hans Wegner’s 1949 Round Chair PP503
which became famous as ‘The Chair’ or ‘The Kennedy Chair’ when it was chosen for the CBS television debates between JFK and Nixon in 1960. As a result, the design found sudden international fame and this is most likely when this English version was designed and made. The main difference between this and the original inspiration is in the joinery for the sweeping chair back. The Wegner chair has interlocking zig-zag finger joints whereas this round chair is formed from abutting pieces of solid beech joined with dowels.
The PP503 was favoured by Kennedy for the support it gave his back and this chair does the same with the round sweep of the back and a generous seat cushion which has been newly re-upholstered and covered in a jade green velvet. It may not be the famous chair but it is still a well-made, vintage piece with its own genuine history and patina, not a mass-produced modern copy and with the elegance and comfort at a fraction of the price of the Round Chair.
One of the back joints has clearly been re-glued at some point but all joints are solid and secure. New fire retardant upholstery. Could be recovered in an alternative fabric for a small charge.
