Younger ‘Volnay’ Long Sideboard
SOLD
Mid-century afrormosia ‘Volnay’ sideboard by John Herbert for Younger, London c.1960.
This is a beautiful mid-century modern sideboard designed by John Herbert in 1955. It was part of the popular ‘Volnay’ range of furniture made by A. Younger Ltd up until the mid-sixties.It has exceptionally high-quality construction using traditional cabinet-making techniques. The top and end panels are crafted from 19mm thick panels of solid afrormosia (African teak) with a rich red/brown colour and fluid grain like slabs of molten chocolate.
Simple, elegantly sweeping mid-century lines with a bow-fronted top and distinctive large button-shaped handles.
Cupboards with adjustable shelves set either side of four graduated drawers – the upper drawer is baize-lined with dividers for cutlery. The baize shows some signs of wear.
The sideboard is in excellent condition with only a few small blemishes on the top (pictured) consistent with half a century of well-cared for use. It has been gently cleaned and re-coated with Danish oil.
This is the larger 6’6″ version of this classic sideboard.
