Mid-century afrormosia ‘Volnay’ sideboard by John Herbert for Younger c.1959
A beautiful mid-century modern sideboard designed by John Herbert in 1955 as part of the popular ‘Volnay’ range of furniture made by A. Younger Ltd until the mid-sixties. Exceptionally high-quality construction using traditional cabinet-making techniques: the top and end panels are crafted from 19mm thick panels of solid afrormosia (African teak) with a rich red/brown colour and fluid grain. Drawer fronts and cupboard doors finished in a lighter teak veneer
Simple, elegantly sweeping mid-century lines with a bow-fronted top and distinctive large button-shaped handles.
Cupboards with adjustable shelves set either side of four graduated drawers – the upper drawer is baize-lined with dividers for cutlery.
The wood is in excellent condition with only minor blemishes consistent with half a century of well-cared for use. A few faint marks on the top. It has been gently cleaned and re-polished.
This is the more compact 5’6″ version of this classic sideboard.
